MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2011 Contestant Speaks at UCLA's Take Back the Night
Diva Kass, MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2011 contestant (Zuma Beach), spoke at UCLA's Take Back the Night event on May 20th. Take Back the Night, an international initiative to raise awareness about sexual assault and abuse, is recognized annually with rallies, speeches and marches on college campuses and at other venues throughout the world. Kass addressed a crowd of approximately 250 students about her personal experience with sexual violence. Her 30-minute speech offered tips for how students should cope with sexual assault should it happen to them or one of their friends and also advised students on how to change existing university sexual-assault policy to better support victims. Kass also discussed how being a competitor in MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2011, has encouraged her to take back her body and empower herself. Kass, 21, graduated from UC Berkeley in December 2009 with a bachelor's degree in social welfare. She will begin a master's degree program in social work in the fall and plans to attend law school after that. She will continue to advocate for victims of sexual violence as a MISS CALIFORNIA USA 2011 contestant and hopes to start her own non-profit organization one day to provide support to victims and to lobby for changes in laws pertaining to sex crimes. kassdiva@gmail.com
